Protecting yourself from jellyfish at sea has become a real concern for everyone sailing in the Mediterranean. Some weeks of the season, the swarms are dense enough to make swimming impossible, exactly when the water is at its most pleasant.<\/p>\n

Bloom episodes have become a fixture of the Mediterranean calendar. They are irregular, hard to predict more than a few days ahead, and can last from one to several weeks depending on currents and winds.<\/p>\n

The problem is not only the discomfort of a sting. It is the effect on the day: once a swarm is spotted at anchor, nobody gets in the water any more, and the stop loses half its appeal.<\/p>\n

Several methods circulate for protecting yourself from jellyfish at sea, and most disappoint. Barrier creams offer partial protection and assume careful application before every swim, which rarely holds with children.<\/p>\n

Full wetsuits protect effectively, but turn a leisure swim into technical kit. Few passengers agree to pull on a wetsuit for a ten-minute dip at anchor.<\/p>\n
