Boat show display models: what they are really worth

By the Tobo Toys team

Second-hand, refurbished, display model: three different things. What really changes on warranty, condition and price.

In the marine world, three words are used interchangeably although they describe very different things: second-hand, refurbished, and display model. The confusion is costly, in both directions.

Boat show display model, second-hand, refurbished: what changes

A piece ofOccasion has been used. It was used by a previous owner, for a period and in conditions the seller rarely knows precisely. The discount is steep, and so is the uncertainty.

Un produit refurbished has been used then serviced, with wear parts replaced. It is more reliable than raw second-hand, but the base material has lived.

Un display model has never been used. It was set up on a show stand for demonstration, looked at, photographed, then folded away. On inflatable equipment, that means it has never been put in the water nor subjected to the slightest stress.

Boat show display model: why the difference is major on inflatables

A boat show display model is not judged like machinery. On an engine or electronics, wear is measured in operating hours. On an inflatable structure, what counts is quite different: exposure to salt, to ultraviolet light, and the number of folding cycles.

A show slide has undergone none of the three. It spent a few days inflated under a marquee, sheltered. Its condition is not “close to new”, it is strictly identical to new.

That is why we apply the same manufacturer warranty on our Display models as on models straight out of the workshop. There would be no logic in doing otherwise.

What you actually lose

Deux choses, et deux seulement.

Customisation. The model was made for the show, with its shade and its configuration. You choose neither the colour of the tubes nor the position of the logo. For a private owner, that often does not matter. For a fleet building a visual identity, it can be a deal-breaker.

Choice. There is only one unit per model, and stock is replenished only after a show. If the model you want has gone, you have to wait for the next one or go through production.

What you gain

A boat show display model buys you two advantages above all. Price, obviously: between 40 and 50 per cent off depending on the model. A TOBO GLISS 70 goes from 2,490 to 1,250 euros, an EXTREM 110 from 3,400 to 2,250 euros.

But above all the lead time. A bespoke build takes several weeks from the moment the plan is approved. A display model ships immediately. When the season has started or a booking is coming up, that is often the deciding factor.

Boat show display model: the questions to ask before buying

Whether you buy from us or elsewhere, four questions tell you what you are dealing with.

Has the equipment been put in the water? That is the question that really separates a display model from second-hand. On marine inflatables, it changes everything.

How many times has it been inflated and folded away? A show stand means two or three cycles. A season of use means several dozen.

Does the warranty apply on the same terms? If the seller reduces the warranty, it is because they are not sure of the product’s condition.

Is the equipment complete? Pump, manual, repair kit: a unit missing its accessories loses part of its economic appeal.

Who it is the right choice for

A boat show display model suits three cases. For a first purchase, when you want to test the idea without committing to the price of new. For a charter operator who has to equip several boats before the season starts. For any project where lead time matters more than customisation.

Conversely, if your slide has to carry a fleet’s colours, bespoke manufacturing remains the only way. Our current availability is on the page Occasion, and we answer any question from the contact page.
